We are lucky enough to have a varied selection of glass playing pieces and beads hand crafted for us at Present Past. These pieces are made using a process known as lampwork, and are spun on a mandrel. Traditionally, small fragments of previously made coloured glass would be heated over a concentrated heat source from a small forge. As these pieces melt they are spun onto a rod, the mandrel, and manipulated to form intricately decorative forms. Modern lampworking uses a gas torch to do the heating, however this is essentially the only modernisation.
These playing pieces are all direct reproductions of historical finds from across Britain, Sweden, Denmark and Russia; from the Iron Age through to the 1100s. The pieces we currently have in stock are full sets for Hnefatafl, Tablut, Halatafl and Ludus latrunculorum, among others. Combined with one of our deluxe wooden gaming boards, these glass sets are truly spectacular, but they can also be supplied separately upon occasion.
Prices start from £45 for a full set
