Many of these types of items have been found across the UK, Scotland and as far north as the Orkney Isles. Originally these would have been plates that covered highly ornate boxes. As such many of them were beautifully tooled and carved.
Items like these have been found made from a variety of organic materials such as deer antler, cow and whalebone. First, a large flat section of bone must be carefully cut to size. The designs are then cut and carved into the bone using tools such as ring and dot augers - this design being incredibly common across Roman through 'Viking' and even Victorian organic material items.
The designs here are based off five Roman era archaeological finds from Orkney, Caithness and Northern England.
