Toys and Games have been been found across all time periods, customs and civilisations, with many children’s toys being familiar to those you still find today. While the materials and complexity may have changed, the hours of joy had with them has not.
Wooden toy animals showing stylised representations of animals have been found in many of the major population centres of Early Medieval Europe. One of the most famous of these is the Trondheim horse, which was found in Trondheim, in Norway, and is thought to date from the 11th century.
Present Past offers a selection of hand cut and carved wooden toys in a variety of designs. Current designs are based on animal representations from Pictish stone carvings, which are found all over Eastern Scotland, as well as a horse modelled on the Trondheim find.
Each toy is made from seasoned sustainable Scottish hardwood, lightly stained with olive oil to both darken and preserve the toy. As such the toys are non toxic and are designed as to resist breakage into small pieces. ***Even so, adult supervision is always recommended***
Current designs include the Pictish Boar, Bull and Dog, and the reproduction of the Viking era Trondheim Horse.
These toys will run out quickly, but more can be made to order in the same or custom designs if requested.
Prices £8-£10 each
